Tesla High-Voltage Battery Replacement in OKC: What Owners Should Know

When a Tesla shows a high-voltage battery warning, reduced power message, charging problem, or other battery-related fault, it is easy to assume the main battery pack has failed.

But that is not always the case.

At Priebe’s Auto Clinic & Tire Center in Oklahoma City, we recently diagnosed a Tesla that appeared to have a high-voltage battery problem. After proper testing, the battery pack itself did not need to be replaced. The vehicle ended up needing high-voltage contactors and a rear drive unit instead.

Battery Warnings Do Not Always Mean a Bad Battery

A Tesla’s high-voltage system includes more than just the battery pack. Contactors, wiring, drive units, charging components, sensors, and other high-voltage parts all work together.

A problem in one of these systems can sometimes create symptoms that look like battery failure.

That is why we do not recommend replacing a Tesla high-voltage battery based on a warning message alone. Below you can see the control system and Contactors for this Model S Battery.

Why Proper Tesla Diagnostics Matter

A high-voltage battery is one of the most expensive parts of a Tesla. Before replacing it, the system should be tested carefully to find the real cause of the problem.

Proper diagnostics may include checking fault codes, battery data, contactor operation, isolation faults, drive unit concerns, charging issues, and other high-voltage components.

The goal is simple: find the failed part before replacing expensive components. The Pyro Fuse seen below is another common failure point that can present as a bad battery.

When Does a Tesla HV Battery Need Replacement?

Sometimes testing does confirm an internal battery problem, and high-voltage battery replacement may be needed. When that happens, the repair requires the right training, equipment, and high-voltage safety procedures.

But in other cases, the battery may be healthy and another part of the high-voltage system is causing the warning.
