Why Do I Keep Having to Recharge My Car AC?

Your cars Air Conditioning System requires specific pressures in the system to operate. When there is a leak in the system, even a small one, the system will lose pressure and not be able to cool the air anymore. Running a system low on refrigerant can also cause other issues. Ac System Refrigerant or Freon also has lubricant in it. A lack of freon can cause damage to other areas of the AC System.  Many small leaks with only require a system to be recharged once every year or so, but when there is a more substantial leak it may be way more often. There are many common leaks on AC Systems. They can be as simple to repair as a 5-minute replacement of the AC Service Valves. It can be as time consuming as pulling the entire dash to access an Evaporator Core. This may take more than a day’s worth of work.  In the picture below you can see the leak at the weld between the condenser and the drier.

Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint a leak in an AC system. At Priebe’s Auto Clinic and Tire Center we use several different systems to find leaks. The first is UV Dye. We can install dye in the system that glows when it leaks out. We can also pressurize your system and use soap to see where bubbles are created. No matter what the leak we can figure it out an get it repaired.  Below is our Technician Nathan looking for UV Dye on a leaking system.
