Road Trip Ready? Don’t Let Your Tires Ground Your Vacation

5 Tire Safety Checks to Perform Before Your Next Oklahoma Road Trip

There is nothing quite like the freedom of an open highway, but a roadside emergency on the Turner Turnpike can turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. At Priebe’s Auto Clinic, we believe in building world-class people to provide a world-class product. Part of that product is ensuring your vehicle is factory-solid before you ever pull out of the driveway.

If you’re searching for “tire maintenance tips for road trips,” here are the five essential checks our team performs during every World-Class Digital Vehicle Inspection.

1. The “Cold” Pressure Check

Proper inflation is the #1 factor in tire longevity and fuel economy.

  • The Rule: Check your pressure in the morning before you’ve driven more than a mile.
  • The Tip: Use the PSI number located on your driver’s side door jamb. Underinflated tires flex excessively, generating dangerous heat that can lead to a blowout in the 90° Oklahoma summer.

2. The Penny (and Quarter) Test

Tread depth determines how well your car can stop in a sudden spring downpour.

  • Penny Test: Place a penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you see all of his head, you have less than 2/32” of tread and need immediate replacement.
  • Quarter Test: If you can see the top of Washington’s head, you have less than 4/32”. Your stopping distance in the rain is already compromised.

3. Sidewall Integrity: Bulges and Weather Cracking

Oklahoma potholes and the intense UV sun are brutal on tire rubber.

  • The “Bubble”: An impact with a curb or pothole can cause a bulge in the sidewall. This is a structural failure and a “ticking time bomb.”
  • Weather Cracking (Dry Rot): Look for small hairline cracks or a “chalky” appearance. This happens when the oils in the rubber break down due to UV exposure and lack of use. Weather-cracked tires lose their elasticity, making them prone to splits and sudden failure when they get hot at highway speeds.

The two photos below are the same tire. From the outside this tire looked completely normal. From the inside it looks like it could explode at any minute. This is why we recommend a profession check before a long trip.

4. Don’t Forget the “Ghost” Tire

Many modern vehicles no longer come with a full-sized spare.

  • The Action: Ensure your spare (or your roadside inflation kit) is functional. A spare tire with 0 PSI is just extra weight when you’re stranded on the side of the road.

5. The Vibration Warning

If you feel a rhythmic vibration in the steering wheel at 60 mph, your tires are likely out of balance or misaligned.

  • The Result: Ignoring a vibration causes rapid, uneven wear that can ruin a brand-new set of tires in a single road trip.
