In modern engines the Crankshaft and Camshaft(s) have to be timed to each other. This allows the valves in the top end to open and close at the correct time as pistons move up and down. There are three main types of timing systems in modern cars. They are Timing Belts, Timing Chains, and Timing Gears. In this blog we will focus on the first two. Most modern passenger cars are either timed by Chain or Belt. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
First lets talk about timing belts. Timing belts are generally made of reinforced rubber. Usually with a Kevlar or something similar inside. Timing belts are lighter and therefor more efficient than a timing chain. They are generally quieter, and much easier to replace. The downside to a timing belt is that it is temporary. Timing belts don’t last forever. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend Timing Belt Replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. This can be an expensive maintenance item.
Timing Chains are the most common type of timing in modern vehicles. They look alot like the chain on a bike, but are generally thicker and stronger. The main advantage of timing chains is that they are durable. Timing chains don’t need to be replaced unless there is an issue. Sometimes they may last as long as the engine itself. This lowers the maintenance cost on most vehicles. Below is the timing chain for a Mercedes Benz C Class.
