Why Does My Car AC Smell Bad?

Does your AC System smell bad in your car? Does it smell like Vinegar or Mildew? Here is why!

When you turn your AC on for the first time this year, if it smells bad, you’ve got a problem. Water is a normal biproduct of your ac system. Condensation forms and drains from your AC Evaporator Core. This in inside the dash of your car. The most common reason for a Bad Smell in your Car AC System is that the drain gets clogged. This can cause excessive moisture in your AC Vent system. This can lead to mildew in the system. To remedy this issue we generally unclog the Evap Drain and let the Ac system dry out before use. We can also do a disinfecting service on your AC Evaporator.

The next most common issue for a Stinky AC System is an old Cabin Air Filter. The Cabin Air Filter filters the air being blown into the car by the Air Conditioner. As this filter gets older it can start to smell stale. Below is a picture of an older cabin air filter next to the brand new one that we replaced it with. You can see how the air in your car may stink after being blown through this filter.
