Why Is My Car Leaking Oil?

The Three Most Common Oil Leaks!!

Oil Leaks are one of the most common issues that we repair here at Priebe’s Auto Clinic. Your oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates the moving parts and ensures that your engine lasts as long as possible. Here are the three most common oil leaks that we see.

  1. Gasket or Seal Failure- Your engine consists of hundreds of parts that all work together to ensure proper operation. Where many of these connect, there are gaskets or seals to ensure a good seal. When these gaskets fail oil can escape and leak onto the ground. Some of the most common gasket failures are Valve Cover Gaskets, Oil Pan Gaskets, and Crankshaft Oil Seals. Below you can see an Engine Oil Pan Gasket that has failed.

2. Oil Cooler or Filter Housing Failure- These are a common issue in may cars. The oil cooler on most vehicles uses coolant to help cool the engine oil. They have a tendency to warp with the heating/cooling of the engine. When this happens they can no longer seal and will begin to leak oil or coolant. Below, for example, is an oil cooler on a Jaguar.

    3. Sensor Failure- Most engines have a few different oil sensors. Pressure sensors, Level Sensors, and Temp Sensors are all common. When one of these sensors fails, many times, oil will leak out. These are usually pressurized leaks and can be very serious.
