Modern vehicles have as many as 10 different fluids. Each is important for the operation of of the system that is lubricates or protects. Most of these fluids are in a closed system and should not be used over time. Transmission is one of these. At Priebe’s Auto Clinic we consider transmission fluid to be one of the most important fluid. This is because the Transmission is one of the most expensive components on your vehicle.
There are several common Transmission Fluid Leaks that we see. Any of which can cause major issues if your transmission runs low on fluid. These are some of the most common.
Transmission Pans- The transmission pan is the main access point to view and service the inside of the transmission. This is where the filter is usually found. The Transmission Pan is usually sealed with a gasket. When these fail the transmission leaks from the bottom. Below is a picture of the transmission pan on a Jeep.

Transmission Cooler Lines- Most modern transmission have a cooler near the front of the vehicle to help keep temps low. There are hoses or metal lines that transport the fluid to the cooler and back to the transmission. When these leak you may notice fluid dripping towards the front of the vehicle. Below are some leaking transmission cooler lines on a Honda Odyssey. This van was two quarts low on fluid.
