If your car feels like it is slipping between gears, shifting late, or acting strange when you accelerate, it may have a transmission problem. You may notice the engine RPM going up, but the car does not speed up like it should.
At Priebe’s Auto Clinic & Tire Center in Oklahoma City, we diagnose transmission concerns and help find the cause before major repairs are recommended.
What Does Transmission Slipping Feel Like?
A slipping transmission may cause:
- The engine to rev without normal acceleration
- A delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse
- Hard or rough shifting
- A shudder or vibration
- Trouble staying in gear
- A warning light on the dash
These symptoms can have more than one cause, so testing is important.
Can Transmission Fluid Cause Slipping?
Yes. Low, dirty, or worn transmission fluid can cause shifting problems. A leak can also lower the fluid level and make the transmission act differently.
Checking the fluid condition and looking for leaks is one of the first steps in a proper transmission inspection.
The Leaking Transmission seen below caused a poor shift due to low fluid. The photo below that shows the fluid on a transmission that had gone completely out. It is burnt and black in stead of a nice red color.

What Else Can Cause Shifting Problems?
Transmission problems are not always caused by internal damage. Electrical issues, sensors, solenoids, wiring, mounts, or computer controls can also affect how a vehicle shifts.
That is why a scan tool and proper testing matter. Guessing can lead to replacing parts that were not actually the problem.
Do You Need a Transmission Rebuild?
Not always.
Before assuming the transmission needs major internal repair, it is important to check the fluid, scan the vehicle for trouble codes, inspect for leaks, and test related systems.
At Priebe’s Auto Clinic, our goal is to find out what is causing the problem and help you understand the right next step.
